“This is my top one: Doulas should be allowed in surgical spaces.”

- Olivia Atley

🔑 5 Key Takeaways:

  1. Empowerment Through Doula Support: Doulas offer essential support and empowerment during birth, providing continuity of care that is often missing in hospital settings.

  2. Mindfulness and Personalization: Incorporating daily mindfulness practices and personal comfort elements can significantly enhance the birth experience.

  3. Community and Communication: Engaging a support network before birth ensures comprehensive care during the postpartum phase.

  4. Advocacy and Education: By educating ourselves and advocating for doula support within medical spaces, we pave the way for better maternity care.

  5. Planning for Postpartum: Detailed postpartum plans and leveraging community resources can alleviate stress and allow for a more nurturing recovery period.

The Journey to Birth Work

Olivia Attley’s foray into birth work was deeply personal, rooted in her own maternal journey. While pursuing her Masters in Dance Production Management at The Ohio State University, she faced unexpected challenges that shifted her perspective. From not being permitted to dance while pregnant to discovering the transformative world of yoga, Olivia realized the missing pieces in her journey: support and understanding. Her pregnancy became an epiphany, leading her to become a doula, trained in pranayama, meditation, and eventually, a Reiki master and yoga instructor.

The Role of a Doula: Empowerment and Support

One of the misconceptions Olivia addresses is the notion that birthing individuals don’t need help, or that your L&D Nurse is the only help you need.

✨ Your L&D nurse won’t be by your side the whole time. ✨

Labor is one of the most vulnerable and transformative moments in life, but many parents-to-be are surprised to learn that their Labor & Delivery nurse won’t always be in the room with them. Here’s why:

  1. You’re not their only patient. There is a high likelihood that they have more than one patient or responsibility during their shift.

  2. They monitor from the nurses’ station. Unless they are checking your vitals, doing intermittent monitoring, see something alarming on your strip, or you specifically buzz them to come in... they will be monitoring the screens from the nurses’ station down the hall from your room.

  3. Labor can be long. Especially for first time birthers, inductions, or if you arrive at the hospital during early labor... chances are there will be at least 1-3 shift changes before baby arrives; which means 1-3 new strangers to get to know and inform of your preferences and everything you’ve done so far

That’s where a birth doula comes in. A doula provides continuous bedside support—emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Unlike other members of the medical team, a doula is focused 100% on YOU, offering the reassurance and guidance you deserve from the start of labor to the moment you meet your baby.

She emphasizes the vital role doulas play in bridging the gap between medical care and personal support. Doulas provide continuous care, helping not only the birther but also supporting partners during the process. Olivia believes every birther deserves to feel supported, informed, and empowered, underscoring the necessity of having someone beyond the medical staff who truly knows the birthing person’s journey and preferences.

Creating a Calm and Empowered Birth Experience

Olivia shares practical tips for creating a serene birthing environment. She advocates for the incorporation of mindfulness activities throughout pregnancy, like meditation or walking in nature, to maintain emotional balance and peace. Olivia also highlights how adapting the birthing space with personalized elements—such as dim lighting or nature sounds—can create comfort. She suggests making "power cards" with affirmations to remind the birther of their strength during labor.

Doulas Belong in Surgical Spaces

When someone gives birth via Cesarean, their need for support doesn’t stop at the O.R. doors. Yet, in many hospitals, doulas aren’t allowed in surgical spaces, even though their role is to provide continuous emotional, physical, and informational support for their clients.

Here’s why this matters:

👉 A doula’s presence can help reduce anxiety and fear in a surgical environment.

👉 They provide emotional reassurance, explain what’s happening, and advocate for the client’s birth preferences.

👉 After the baby is born, a doula can assist with immediate bonding or ensure the client feels supported while their partner may be attending to the baby.

Continuous support shouldn’t end when the birth plan shifts. Whether it’s a vaginal delivery or a C-section, everyone deserves to feel supported and heard throughout their birth experience.

Building a Postpartum Village

The importance of community support extends well into the postpartum period. Olivia encourages crafting a detailed postpartum plan, identifying who in your network can offer specific help, such as cooking meals or cleaning the house. Utilizing resources like Meal Train® and Meal Train® Plus allows families to organize support efficiently, whether it’s meals, childcare, or household tasks.
